The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi has, since September 1, 2026, no longer allowed most visitors to enter without a ticket. The decision by the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre (SZGMC) ends the longstanding practice of free entry for all and introduces a system that differentiates between tourists, residents, and organized groups.

This change is part of SZGMC's broader strategy to improve visitor management, ensure a more peaceful experience, and support extensive maintenance and development of the site.

International tourists pay 10 dirhams (approximately $2.72), UAE residents with a valid Emirates ID pay five dirhams (about $1.36), and visitors coming through tour operators pay eight dirhams per person. Religious accessibility remains untouched: entry is free for worshippers, visitors over 60 years old, children under three, and people with special needs.

This tiered approach follows a trend among major religious and cultural landmarks worldwide. St. Mark's Basilica in Venice and St. Paul's Cathedral in London have also introduced fees to maintain operations and manage large visitor numbers. Unlike them, SZGMC retains free guided cultural tours led by cultural specialists for both individuals and groups, preserving the mosque's educational mission.

From Sightseeing to Experience

Along with the general admission ticket, the mosque has expanded its cultural offerings with new attractions that require additional payment. The Light & Peace Museum and Diya, a 360-degree interactive experience, each cost 25 dirhams, while a combined ticket for both attractions is 40 dirhams.

A special tour of the main prayer hall is available for 30 dirhams. SZGMC is clearly shifting the focus from passive sightseeing to a more enriching and educational cultural journey.

Abayas No Longer Lent

A significant change for visitors is the dress code policy. SZGMC has stopped lending abayas to guests who arrive in inappropriate attire, a service that existed before the COVID-19 pandemic. Those needing suitable clothing can now purchase an abaya for 45 dirhams at Souq Al Jami, a store adjacent to the mosque.

The new policy effectively requires visitors to plan their attire in advance to avoid being turned away at the entrance.

Record Attendance and Crowd Management

The introduction of fees comes at a time when the mosque is breaking attendance records. In the first half of 2026 alone, it received over 3.12 million visitors, 78 percent of whom were from abroad. Previously, 2025 was a record year with 6.8 million guests, the highest annual attendance to date.

Therefore, the fees are not solely a means of generating revenue but also serve a behavioral function: they help control crowds and ensure a more organized and peaceful atmosphere for all guests, in line with the mosque's growing global popularity.

SZGMC emphasizes that the fees will support maintenance and enhance the visitor experience, but details on how the collected funds will be specifically allocated remain unavailable. The long-term impact of the new pricing on the overall number of visitors and their composition will become clearer with data after implementation.

For now, those planning to visit this architectural landmark should account for the ticket, the possibility of additional cultural attractions, and the need to arrive in appropriate attire or budget for purchasing an abaya.
